The BarCamp Scarf Weekend Report

Jun 12

I had imagined the resonance to be much higher for my scarf project and it was when I announced it. Though in the end not very many people came to me to pick a color, everyone I asked for a choice played along though, so the limit in participants was more due to my decided lack of energy in going to ask more people on BarCamp Sunday. But if I remove myself from my rather high expectations, the resonance was great.

Thank you very much to everyone who participated!

A Little Statistics:

48 people participated. 19 picked petrol, 12 coral, 9 white and 8 brown. (40%, 25%, 19% and 17%) While associations with water and oceans seemed to be the standard for a blue choice, no one replied with love associations as they picked the red coral color. White seems to be a pure and cuddly color. The last one I find highly interesting. The grayish brown seemed to be a color of both mediocrity and full of stories. Responses from the people who wrote in with a color choice were decidedly longer, than explanations in person. A few of the reasons were great conversation starters, but not all. The color pattern is:

The List of Submissions

  1. Paula: Braun, weil das die Farbe von meinem Kuschelhund ist.
  2. Susan: I choose Coral. The color red has somewhat followed me throughout my life. I was very shy growing up and mainly wanted to be invisible. Somehow, most gifts I received from people were bright red. I got a red camera, a red walkman, a red backpack, a red suitcase. It is hard to be invisible in a world of black accessories when you’re carrying around a “violently red” backpack, as one of my classmates called.
Over the years my confidence grew and instead of people making comments about my bright red belongings, they started making comments about my personality that seem representative of the color red. “You’re too abrasive,” “you’re too ambitious,” “you’re too serious,” “you’re too assertive.” Basically, I was too strong, bright and in your face, like the color red can be.
It is a very hard balance to find, between what you want and believe is right and what others see you as or try to “correct” you into being.
Today, my wardrobe is made up of every color, except for white and black and I make it a point to have important objects in my everyday life that are red – like my yoga mat and my backpack. The color red is a symbol to me of who I am and I wear it cultivate more acceptance and support of myself.
I read a quote somewhere that I’ve found to be true. It’s “Be your own best friend.” The color red is a reminder to be true to myself.
  3. Delisa: I choose the petrol. I’m assuming that is the blue looking yarn in your pic? If it is a blue-ish color it is the one I want. Lol.
I picked it because it reminds me of water. The calming ripples, the coolness against your skin, and how it is so full of life.
Where I live there are lots of lakes, rivers and streams. I can’t imagine living somewhere without being close to water. As a kid I would spend every possible moment swimming in the river that ran through the town where I lived. The town I live in now is on the edge of a large lake. We spend our summer days there fishing, swimming and enjoying our family and friends. We gather at the lake to have fun and enjoy the outdoors. Just a few weeks ago, we were at the lake fishing and had the pleasure of watching a bald eagle circle above and swoop down and catch a fish. It was amazing to watch.

One of my great loves is Japanese Gardens. The stones in the gardens are often a gray-brown color, and give me a sense of strength and serenity and just-rightness. Each stone, from boulders to pebbles, has a meaning and a purpose and an intent that are not found in many other garden styles. Stones are stories, and I dearly wish to learn their language so that I can hear them.
  43. Birdy: Of the colors you offer, coral is my choice.
    Color is everything to me.
It brings light & life to dark, dull places, and helps to make the world a brighter place.
Coral in specific calls to me of the sea.
    Many things do these days.
I am a Dry Bird of late.
So the sea calls with the voice of seagulls. :>
  46. Jan: Weiß, wegen der Unschuld. Schau mich an;)
  47. Charlie: I choose the color patrole. It reminds me of the ocean. The ocean has always played a big role in my life. It is the place where I could relax. Sitting at the beach and watching the waves go back and forth, up and down has something very soothing. My father lived in California for ten years and except for one year I was lucky enough to fly there at least once every year. His one-room apartment had a beautiful view over the ocean. A couple of meters further there was an overview, where you could sit and watch the waves, the people, the surfers, the sun. These moments where always perfect moments for me. And always the first and last view I got on all of these wonderful trips. The color reminds me of this place with this wonderful view. It’s the proof, that there is a heaven on earth and that there are perfect moments in life.
  48. Gavin: I choose white. I married in a kilt and my stockings were the same color as that yarn.

  1. It is going to be a beautiful scarf when you get it all done. Even though you didn’t get as many people as you had hoped, it is still an amazing idea & project.
